Michael Johansson (Sweden)
The Swedish artist Michael Johansson makes sculptures by piling up everyday objects. These works form a deceptively-simple cross-section of our material world. Like a game of Tetris, Johansson builds his piles of cabinets, refrigerators, books and plastic toys into monolithic sculptures in which every part fits perfectly together. The forms thus created invest everyday things with new meaning.
After studies at the Art Academy in Trondheim, Norway, and Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee, Germany, Michael Johansson took his masters degree at Malmö Art Academy, Sweden, 2005. After graduation he has taken part in several residencies, exhibited frequently both in Sweden and internationally, and constantly developed new work. He currently lives and works in Malmö, Sweden.
